چکیده

Natural neighbor coordinates [20] are optimum weighted-average measures for an irregular arrangement of nodes in R. [26] used the notion of Bézier simplices in natural neighbor coordinates Φ to propose a C interpolant. The C interpolant has quadratic precision in Ω ⊂ R, and reduces to a cubic polynomial between adjacent nodes on the boundary ∂Ω. We present the C formulation and propose a computational methodology for its numerical implementation (Natural Element Method) for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). The approach involves the transformation of the original Bernstein basis functions B i (Φ) to new shape functions Ψ(Φ), such that the shape functions ψ3I−2(Φ), ψ3I−1(Φ), and ψ3I(Φ) for node I are directly associated with the three nodal degrees of freedom wI , θIx , and θIy , respectively. The C shape functions interpolate to nodal function and nodal gradient values, which renders the interpolant amenable to application in a Galerkin scheme for the solution of fourth-order elliptic PDEs. Results for the biharmonic equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are presented. The generalized eigenproblem is studied to establish the ellipticity of the discrete biharmonic operator, and consequently the stability of the numerical method. c © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Dispersive properties of the natural element method

The Natural Element Method (NEM) is a meshfree numerical method for the solution of partial differential equations. In the natural element method, natural neighbor coordinates, which are based on the Voronoi tesselation of a set of nodes, are used to construct the interpolant. The performance of NEM in two-dimensional linear elastodynamics is investigated. A standard Galerkin formulation is use...

Sibson and non-Sibsonian interpolants for elliptic partial differential equations

The Natural Element Method (NEM) is a meshless Galerkin method which has shown promise in the area of computational mechanics. In earlier applications of NEM [1–3], natural neighbor (Sibson) coordinates [4] were used to construct the trial and test functions. Recently, Belikov and co-workers [5] proposed a new interpolation scheme (non-Sibsonian interpolation) based on natural neighbors. In thi...

Natural element analysis of the Cahn–Hilliard phase-field model

We present a natural element method to treat higher-order spatial derivatives in the Cahn–Hilliard equation. The Cahn–Hilliard equation is a fourth-order nonlinear partial differential equation that allows to model phase separation in binary mixtures. Standard classical C0-continuous finite element solutions are not suitable because primal variational formulations of fourth-order operators are ...

Numerical Computation of Discrete Differential Operators on Non-Uniform Grids

In this paper, we explore the numerical approximation of discrete differential operators on nonuniform grids. The Voronoi cell and the notion of natural neighbors are used to approximate the Laplacian and the gradient operator on irregular grids. The underlying weight measure used in the numerical computations is the Laplace weight function, which has been previously adopted in meshless Galerki...

Issues and Implementation of C1 and C2 Natural Neighbor Interpolation

Smooth local coordinates have been proposed by Hiyoshi and Sugihara 2000 to improve the classical Sibson’s and Laplace coordinates. These smooth local coordinates are computed by integrating geometric quantities over weights in the power diagram. In this paper we describe how to efficiently implement the Voronoi based C local coordinates. The globally C interpolant that Hiyoshi and Sugihara pre...
